Getting to Athens - the train and our first night in Athens

Image
September 19 th : Thessaloniki to Athens:  The word of the day - Synchronicity We caught the 9:15 train to Athens.  Train travel in Greece is mor e primitive t han most of Europe.  The station at Thessaloniki was fairly empty and there are only 9 tracks some of which appear to be unused.  But we got on our graffiti covered train and started the trip.  Along the way we saw other abandoned train cars with similar graffiti.  Fortunately, our car was in better shape than this. The trip took us through cotton fields that had me singing about those old cotton fields back home.  Reminded me a lot of the cotton fields of south Texas in the ‘50s. Then there were fields of corn and finally as we got closer to Athens, then unmistakable silver shine of olive trees.  The train trip is reminiscent of our other train travels through eastern Europe as the countryside was dotted with small towns.  Passing small town after small to...

Thessaloniki

September 17 th : Thessaloniki-arrival night: We arrived about 9 at night and made our way to our hotel.   We were wishing we could have arrived during daylight but were just happy to be there.   The scenes outside in the dark were beautiful knowing we had the Aegean Sea on one side and a mountain on the other.   But we couldn’t see them.  A late evening walk through town found crowds everywhere having their dinner, drinks and wine.   This is a college town with two major universities, one with over 30,000 students.   Dining is a late-night ritual that never starts before nine and last until midnight when everyone leaves the restaurants and makes their way to the bars to carry on.   We were not ready for this having just spent the last day in transit, so we went to bed early at 1 am.   Midnight in Thessaloniki.  Still very busy. September 18 th : Thessaloniki – day one (our only day here): Thessaloniki is G...

The Trip to Greece via Istanbul and Turkish Air

September 16 th :   The word of the day is Present Remember when you were a kid in school and the teacher called the role and you said Present .   You didn’t know it at the time but that’s the key to life.   Present, in the moment, living in the now; savoring and enjoying the here, wherever that is.   Well that’s where we’ve decided we want to be on this trip.   There is so much to look forward to on our agenda and so many things we will experience and look back on but as much as we can, we are going to live in the moment and savor it.   We were in the moment while savoring the meal on Turkish Airlines. September 17 th : At the Airport in Istanbul: We are still in shock that we’ve started this adventure but so excited too.   We arrived in the Istanbul airport an hour ago and are now sitting and waiting for our flight to Thessaloniki. This is a brand new airport that just opened this year.  We were not sure what to expect but it w...

The word of the day is Persistence! That's what it takes when Google won't let you authenticate without your phone and you can't get text with your phone - so you create a new blog site and carry on.  Instead of www.twocurioussouls.com  it is www.twocurioussouls.blogspot.com to get to the site. Starting over... On the way to Thessaloniki via Istanbul.  Next up - The heart of Thessaloniki is Aristotle Square.  More on that later.
