The Trip to Greece via Istanbul and Turkish Air


September 16th:  The word of the day is Present
Remember when you were a kid in school and the teacher called the role and you said Present.  You didn’t know it at the time but that’s the key to life.  Present, in the moment, living in the now; savoring and enjoying the here, wherever that is.  Well that’s where we’ve decided we want to be on this trip.  There is so much to look forward to on our agenda and so many things we will experience and look back on but as much as we can, we are going to live in the moment and savor it. 

We were in the moment while savoring the meal on Turkish Airlines.


September 17th: At the Airport in Istanbul:
We are still in shock that we’ve started this adventure but so excited too.  We arrived in the Istanbul airport an hour ago and are now sitting and waiting for our flight to Thessaloniki. This is a brand new airport that just opened this year.  We were not sure what to expect but it was beautiful.  The flight over was uneventful in the sense that we had no issues, but so eventful as a sensory experience.  We enjoyed the best food and service we have ever had on an airplane and I dare say better than 99% of the restaurants we have visited.  Hooray for Turkish Airlines. United could learn a thing or two from them. Eating dinner at mid-night was an experience too.

Los Conquistadores Españoles

  Okay, maybe we’re being a little aggressive in saying we’ve come to conquer Spain. More than likely, we’ll find ourselves not conquering, but rather, falling in love with Spain and the Spaniards. We will find out along the way. So far, they have been extremely welcoming to us. The flight over ‘the pond’ was the usual mix of people able to sleep and those of us who don’t do so well. One woman two seats ahead of us decided to party through the night and watched movies and drank wine all night long. Maybe she doesn’t have Netflix at home. They gave us all noise-cancelling headphones. At one point, around 3 am somewhere, she had her headphones on, and she was yelling out at the movie, “…don’t give up on him, don’t give up on him!” Susane got a laugh while Malcolm slept through it. Another gentleman in front of us brought his seat back and was out like a light for the duration. We were in and out of shallow sleep and arrived restless and exhausted.   The word of the day is...

Prisons

 In 50 years of traveling and thousands of hotel nights, I have never had a hotel room that had a scenic overlook of a prison. Even if only a former prison that is now deactivated. At times, I felt like I could almost hear the screams of Franco's wrongly imprisoned inmates crying out. We do not need Franco style dictators in the world.
