The Beauty of Understanding Only English

Malcolm here. I often think it would be great to be fluent in another language. But then, just for a moment, I realize that not being able to read the nutrition values on this label* is a good thing!

Los Conquistadores Españoles

  Okay, maybe we’re being a little aggressive in saying we’ve come to conquer Spain. More than likely, we’ll find ourselves not conquering, but rather, falling in love with Spain and the Spaniards. We will find out along the way. So far, they have been extremely welcoming to us. The flight over ‘the pond’ was the usual mix of people able to sleep and those of us who don’t do so well. One woman two seats ahead of us decided to party through the night and watched movies and drank wine all night long. Maybe she doesn’t have Netflix at home. They gave us all noise-cancelling headphones. At one point, around 3 am somewhere, she had her headphones on, and she was yelling out at the movie, “…don’t give up on him, don’t give up on him!” Susane got a laugh while Malcolm slept through it. Another gentleman in front of us brought his seat back and was out like a light for the duration. We were in and out of shallow sleep and arrived restless and exhausted.   The word of the day is...

The Basque Country – AKA the foodie tour

  The Basque Country The Basque Country is situated in the far northeastern corner of Spain at the intersection of France, Spain, and the Atlantic Ocean. With a culture all their own, we are forced to think of the many years of wars surrounding, but not always affecting the region. The Basque Mountains are a transitional range, that exists between the two larger ranges of the Pyrenees to the east and the Cantabrian range to the west. These natural ‘fort-like’ barriers, provided by the mountains, have isolated the area for eons. Until modern times, these barriers protected the region from being invaded and conquered for millenniums. With Spain neutral during the World Wars, only the Napoleon siege of Spain managed to push through the Pyrenees into Spain and conquered the Basque region. The Journey Continues... Dubrovnik

  It's 2026 and tax season is over and it's time for a little adventure on the road. We're heading out to Dubrovnik. We'll then make our way up the Dalmatian Coast to visit some islands, the City of Zadar and on to the northernmost part of Croatia. After a little time in Slovenia we'll make our way to Budapest, where we'll spend the last month of our journey. We invite you to come along with us on the journey.
