It's 2026 and tax season is over and it's time for a little adventure on the road. We're heading out to Dubrovnik. We'll then make our way up the Dalmatian Coast to visit some islands, the City of Zadar and on to the northernmost part of Croatia. After a little time in Slovenia we'll make our way to Budapest, where we'll spend the last month of our journey. We invite you to come along with us on the journey. We arrived in Split on the ferry at 8:30 am, before our first cup of coffee. We decided to just sit at a sidewalk café near the ferry dock and have that cup. What a busy place. We saw cruise ships loading and unloading their passengers. Buses were everywhere. The noise seemed to stay outside, and the coffee was delicious and stabilizing. The bus terminal is adjacent to the dock, and we hopped a shuttle to the airport to rent a car. For the second time in three days, Malcolm had problems buying a bus ticket. It was really his problem. His hearing deficiency exacerbated a frustrated ticket clerk when she was asked for the fourth or fifth time to repeat the amount of the ticket because he couldn't understand what she was saying. Sorry to say that some of these agents are not happy people. The toll booth attendants we encountered were much happier. We toasted later to all the ticket agents who had to deal with Malcolm. Tony Bennett may have left his heart in San Francisco, but our hearts belong to Budapest! Our first trip to Budapest was in the spring of 2001, exactly 25 years and 1 month ago. Hungary had come out from under communist control only 10 years earlier and was a fledgling country trying to find its way. Our train rolled in from Salzburg and stopped at the border-checkpoint to pick up some armed border patrol officers. They walked through the train checking passports and not showing any smiles. The train was an older multi-cabin car that had seen its better days. We arrived in Budapest knowing that the place was different than anywhere we had ever been. Susanne’s unique history with Hungary made it so. This was also our first trip outside to an emerging country. Traveling with our then 18-year-old son, our minds were open.
